Renowned French crystal brand LALIQUE has collaborated with Chinese contemporary artist Fang Lijun to present Yawning Man 2.0, a crystal artwork making its Hong Kong debut during this year’s Hong Kong Tennis Open. Also on display at the Tournament Village is a distinctive eco-friendly artwork 2025-2026 by Fang Lijun, reflecting the importance and future in the cross-disciplinary fusion of sports and art.
After a decade of exploration and refinement, Yawning Man 2.0 brings together Fang Lijun’s artistic vision and LALIQUE’s century-old savoir-faire of crystal. Transcending the boundaries of traditional artistic media, Fang reimagines his iconic painting Series 2, (No. 2), combining its signature bald, yawning figure with the luminous clarity of crystal.
The Yawning Man 2.0 crystal artworks are crafted entirely by hand at the LALIQUE workshops in Alsace, France. Using the precise traditional lost-wax casting technique, LALIQUE’s artisans translate the distinctive contours of Fang’s bald figure into a radiant, three-dimensional crystal form. From the original sculpture, a silicone mould is created and filled with molten wax to form a precise wax model, which is then encased in plaster. Heated until the wax flows away, the mould preserves every contour of the sculpture before two crystal colours are poured within. Blending with subtle grace, the hues flow differently in each creation, embracing every detail and rendering each piece entirely unique. Once cooled, the single-use plaster mould is gently broken to reveal the finished crystal work.
