Singing and Dancing with Brush and Ink: The Art of Wesley Tongson, the final installation of Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s Celebration of Ink exhibition series, runs through 11 October at ASHK’s Chantal Miller Gallery.
Representing the first major institutional exhibition of Wesley Tongson (Tang Jiawei 唐家偉, 1957–2012) in his home city in over a decade, the show highlights his mastery of classical subjects and the innovative “ink play” techniques through which he transformed daily struggles into rich artistic visions of landscapes, expressive finger-painting, and transcendent splashed ink works.
Upcoming programs include a lecture on post-’80s Hong Kong ink painting by academic experts from the Greater Bay Area (late September), and a performance of Alice Ping Yi Ho’s Pictures from an Imagined Exhibition, inspired by Tongson’s dynamic works, performed by celebrated Canadian pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico (October 11). Complimentary guided tours in English and Cantonese are offered weekly.
The exhibition is co-curated by Yi Yi Mon (Rosaline) Kyo and Julia M. White, with support provided by the Asia Society Hong Kong Center Gallery & Exhibitions Team.
